Present project :
- Start :
- 2001
-
During May / June 2001, Jean Delattre,
President of A.A.M.I., visited Mahajanga where he saw the great
job done by Sister Elsy in favour of the destitute populations of
eight slums of Mahabibo (junk city). In the Marie-Virginie hostel,
recently restored, daily she takes care of some 85 children originating
from the surrounding slums and who come to take their midday meal.
You must see the joy of these children, who can go to school after
a meal, who bring back to the Sister their school notes regularly
progressing. These children are the children of the hostel, this
is their abode, they are looked after, loved, dressed, in a word
they are happy. And this happiness, they owe it dear Benefactors
to you who from all over Switzerland, Europe, and from far abroad,
regularly and with such generosity, come to offer your contributions
to help the Poor.

Workshop for women empowerment
During
our stay in June, whilst searching in the slums, for a land or a
dwelling, we made acquaintance with the owner of a huge house of
8 rooms under construction and who was not able to finance the completion.
We proposed to purchase the building and he accepted, and the next
day, we could sign the deal. Here too, The Almighty came to our
help. We had to find rapidly the amount of FRF 140’000.- The
Franciscan Fathers in Germany, who help Sister Elsy, contributed
to gather this amount. We put our last reserves in this project,
we launched several activities to cover the expenses. Today, the
purchase is paid for, we have only to incur the expenses of renovation
to bring the building to the conforming norms. However, without
waiting for us, our untiring Sister has opened on 17 September the
hostel for the elderly who come daily to take a hot meal at the
Saint-François hostel. For those who cannot come, their meals
are brought to them where they live.

Elderly people
This
new hostel Saint François will allow Sister Elsy to receive
the children who have no fixed domicile and often no family. They
are many who survive in precarious conditions in the midst of the
local markets, eating what is left over, what is given to them. They
do some small jobs here and there and when night falls, they sleep
on the ground under the flea shops. For these little ones with the
Sister, we shall put into place a structure to receive them within
the hostel, we shall have to properly feed them, dress them and open
for them a class for reading and writing, foresee a dormitory for
them, in the first place to put them into confidence, in a word, offer
them our friendship and help them smoothly to reintegrate a sound
and normal life. To realize this project, here again, we shall need
the help of all of us, as it will be necessary to build a storey on
the existing building to have the required space.

Elderly people
Then during
2002-2003, Sister Elsy plans to put in place a social and sanitary
structure that will help the prostitutes of the city, we must know
that prostitution also affects children from the age of 8 years.
Already, Sister Elsy has rescued two young mothers from this social
downfall, by taking their children to the hostel and the canteen,
by offering these mothers a work in the kitchen of the hostel, these
mothers keep up in their new jobs, and appreciate the social help
that has allowed them to quit prostitution.
This
is a new challenge, this social and humanitarian work has to be
done, and it is again with your help that we can realize this. We
thank you visitors to our website to help us. Because, Nobody is
better alone than all together.
